Doll House Kit by Sid Cooke .............. Everything You Need To Know

So, you've decided to try a Sid Cooke Doll House Kit - what a wise decision (well I would say that wouldn't I) Here are some suggestions you may want to bear in mind when you receive your Doll House Kit.

Start by reading through the instructions, reviewing the pictures and diagrams and identifying the parts in the Doll House Kit.

Keep the packets of small mouldings and other components sealed, or reseal them after checking the contents.

In most cases you won't need these until your Doll House Kit is in a more advanced build state.

If you take the time to sand the parts carefully you will find the parts much more pleasant to handle and joints easier to assemble.

However, when you sand the parts of the Doll House Kit use a sanding block under the sandpaper (this only needs to be a piece of scrap wood) and keep the block flat on the surface of the wood being sanded.

This will avoid you "rounding" corners that you do not want rounded.

Make a dry run to become familiar with how the parts go together - i. e. Assemble the Doll House Kit without using any glue, holding the parts in place with tape if need be.

Assembling the main carcase of your Doll House Kit is straightforward.

The glue provided (good quality PVA wood glue) will dry quickly and clear - wipe off any excess immediately with a damp cloth.

The joints can be held together with masking tape, clamps / clips or sometimes pins until the glue has set fully.

PVA glue if very powerful and any pins used are essentially to aid the assembly process, the glue will provide perfectly adequate strength for the joints of your Doll house Kit.

Any pins used should either be withdrawn once the glue is dry, or "punched" just below the surface and the hole filled with a wood filler and smoothed with sandpaper after.

If you ensure the panels of your Sid Cooke Doll House Kit are fully located into their respective joints then the assembly will be "square".

You can check corners for square ness using a set-square , or woodworkers tri-square.

Hinging of front panels can be tricky for the inexperienced.

Take your time, it's well worth getting it right.

Sid Cooke Doll House Kits use "Cranked" hinges, which are probably the easiest form of hinge to use.

Attach the narrow, flat half of the hinge to the opening panel and the wider cranked part to the house carcase.

Locations for the hinges are machined onto the front edges of the side panels.

When positioned in these locations you will achieve a very narrow join line between the house side wall and the front panel when it is in the closed position.

As you proceed with building your Doll House Kits plan where you want to position lights other wiring and fireplaces.

It can be easier to drill holes for these features before assembling the panels.

You may also find it easier to decorate some parts of the Doll House Kit before final assembly particularly the small, add on architectural additions for the outside.
